Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen, was sworn in as prime minister of Nepal on 27 March 2026 following a sweeping election victory by the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Reuters reported that the 35-year-old former Kathmandu mayor became Nepal’s youngest prime minister in decades and the first Madhesi to lead the country.
The RSP won 182 seats in Nepal’s 275-member House of Representatives in the 5 March election, giving the relatively young party a commanding parliamentary position. The vote followed the anti-corruption Gen Z protests of September 2025 that transformed Nepal’s political landscape.
Shah entered national office with expectations centred on cleaner government, public service delivery, job creation and economic stability. He formed a comparatively small cabinet after campaigning on reducing state expenses.
