Nepal has inaugurated the Nagdhunga Tunnel, a major road-infrastructure project designed to improve movement through one of the key approaches to Kathmandu.
The tunnel was formally opened on 27 July 2026. SBS Nepali reported that senior Nepali officials attended the inauguration alongside Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru and representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The project is significant because the Nagdhunga corridor has long been associated with congestion and difficult road conditions at the western entrance to the Kathmandu Valley.
Major infrastructure projects in Nepal are closely watched by the diaspora because improved transport can affect travel times, logistics, tourism and regional economic activity.
The opening is also another example of Nepal’s infrastructure partnerships with international development agencies and foreign governments.
Travellers should still check current operating arrangements and traffic advice before relying on the tunnel for a particular journey, especially during the transition period following a major opening.
