Australia expects to provide $23.7 million in Official Development Assistance to Nepal in the 2026–27 financial year, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The figure includes a bilateral allocation estimated at $9.1 million.
DFAT says Australia’s development program in Nepal supports areas including governance, food security, agricultural research, climate resilience, water management and education. Australia Awards are also an important part of the relationship.
The department says more than 370 Nepalis have been supported through the Australia Awards Nepal program since 2009.
Development assistance is only one part of an increasingly broad Australia–Nepal relationship. Education, migration, tourism, trade and a rapidly growing Nepal-born population in Australia have created much deeper people-to-people links than existed a generation ago.
For the Australian Nepali community, the aid program is also relevant because it supports professional and institutional links that can continue long after an individual project ends.
The $23.7 million figure is a budget estimate rather than a guarantee that every dollar will be spent exactly as initially planned. Aid budgets and program delivery can change during the year.
